This is the first book of Lashley's that I read. It's also pretty far out of my usual likes (thriller, noir &c). I was pleasantly surprised. The writing is good, the characters memorable (that's an understatement) - and we do get a wide range of characters who are really characters. As I was reading along, trying to put the story into a nice neat category - is this a supernatural thriller? An alien contact story? A conspiracy story? A murder mystery?It finally dawned on me: All of the above! Except that all the threads gradually come together. But it's not a case of having the rug yanked under you - it all makes sense.The description of "extreme preppers" is practically worth the whole book: the menu of blue-green algae and earthworms, supplemented by field mice, is something I won't soon forget.Bobbie Drex and Nick Grayson are clearly described (I see James Garner as Grayson). The others are mainly "over-the-top" caricatures, but not annoyingly so.About halfway thorugh, Grayson says, "...I’m of the opinion that the creator of the universe actually prefers an underdog.” That's partly how Lashley describes herself But she, and Bobbie, are underdogs with grit, and a terrific sense of humor.Another thing I like about novels is when they give me something I haven't heard of before. Dr Prepper is no exception: I found out about “Momordica charantia,” or bitter melon; about Vrillon and the Ashtar Galactic Command; among other things. She must read at least as much as she writes.I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and I'm looking forward to "Oral Robbers".
